One visit that sets up the first six months
A new puppy comes with a folder of papers, a bag of food someone recommended, and no clear idea of what happens next. The first appointment with a puppy vet in Dubai exists to sort that out. At Petbook Veterinary Clinic in Al Quoz 3 the consultation is AED 120, appointments are usually available the same day, and you leave with a schedule rather than a list of things to worry about.
The visit itself is unhurried on purpose. A licensed veterinarian examines your puppy nose to tail — heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, joints, umbilical area and abdomen — weighs him, and checks him against the age on his papers. Breeder and shelter paperwork in the UAE is not always accurate, and the examination is what tells us whether the vaccination record in front of us can be trusted or has to be started again.

The consultation is AED 120. The First Vaccination Package is AED 199 and a single viral vaccine on its own is AED 80. Deworming is already inside the package. Step by step
What happens at the first appointment
About twenty-five minutes, in this order. Bring whatever paperwork came with him, even if you think it is incomplete.

The papers, read properly
Where he came from, what he has supposedly had, and when. Dates matter more than the list — a vaccine given at five weeks does not count toward the course.
- Step 02
Weight and age check
Weighed on the clinic scale, and his teeth tell us roughly how old he really is. This is where stated ages often turn out to be wrong by weeks.

The full examination
Heart and lungs, eyes and ears, mouth, joints, umbilical area and abdomen. Heart murmurs and umbilical hernias are the two we find most in puppies.
- Step 04
Deworming, dosed on the scale
Almost every puppy carries worms. The dose is matched to today's weight, and repeated on a schedule — a puppy grows out of a dose in weeks.
- Step 05
Vaccination, if he is well
Given only if the examination is clear. If he has a temperature or diarrhoea we treat that first and shift the date rather than push on.

What is different about raising a puppy here
A puppy in Dubai grows up indoors, in air conditioning, on hot ground, under a registration deadline. That changes the advice you will read on overseas websites.

For much of the year pavement is hot enough to blister a puppy's pads. Toilet training and first walks have to work around early morning and late evening.

Owned dogs in Dubai need a microchip, a valid rabies certificate and municipality registration. The vaccination schedule is what unlocks all three.

Shared compound lawns and dog parks mean parasite exposure early. This is why deworming here is a schedule, not a one-off.

When to come in
The first six months, by age
Puppy vaccination works on intervals, not on a single appointment. Miss the spacing and the course loses its protection, so these are the points we book to.

Puppies go downhill fast
When a puppy cannot wait until tomorrow
Puppies have almost no reserves. What would be a wait-and-see problem in an adult dog is a same-day appointment in a puppy — and after hours, the emergency line.
- Repeated vomiting, or diarrhoea with blood in it
- Refusing food or water for more than a few hours
- Weak, floppy, or hard to wake properly
- A swollen, painful belly
- Coughing, or breathing that looks like effort
- Anything swallowed that should not have been — a sock, a cable, a plant
Common questions
Can I walk my puppy 3 days after 2nd vaccination?
Not in shared spaces yet. Three days is not long enough for the body to respond to a dose, and the course is usually not finished at the second one — so dog parks, beaches, compound lawns and pavements other dogs use are still off the list. Carrying him outside, your own balcony, and homes with healthy vaccinated adult dogs are all fine and worth doing, because the socialisation window is closing whether or not the course is done.
How long does a pet microchip last?
The lifetime of the animal. A microchip is a passive tag with no battery — it only powers up for a moment when a scanner passes over it, so there is nothing to run down or replace. What does expire is the information attached to it: if you move, change number or rehome the animal and never update the database, the chip still scans but leads nowhere.
Is inserting a microchip painful for dogs?
It is a single injection between the shoulder blades with a wider needle than a vaccine, over in a couple of seconds. Most puppies react about as much as they do to a normal vaccination, and many barely notice. There is no anaesthetic needed and no recovery — he can eat, walk and play straight after.
Is microchipping a pet expensive?
It is a one-off cost, not a recurring one — the chip lasts the animal's life and never needs replacing or charging. What are the disadvantages of microchipping a dog?
The honest ones are small: a brief injection, a very small chance the chip migrates a short distance under the skin, and — the real one — a chip is useless if the contact details on the database are never updated. It is not a GPS tracker and will not tell you where your dog is; it identifies him when someone scans him. Update your details whenever you move or change number, which in Dubai is often.
