What happens at a cat vaccination visit
The injection is the shortest part of the appointment. Everything around it decides whether the vaccine is right — and whether today is the day.
- Step 01
Her history, read properly
A record book, a foreign certificate, an adoption paper, or nothing at all. What she has already had decides what she gets today.
- Step 02
Examination before anything is given
Weight, temperature, eyes, ears, mouth and coat. A vaccine belongs in a well cat — if she is brewing cat flu today, the vet says so and rebooks you.
- Step 03
Out of the carrier on her terms
The lid comes off in the consult room and she stays on the towel she arrived on. Less restraint means a cleaner examination, not just a calmer cat.

The vaccine she is actually due

Most of what you pay for happens before the vaccine. A licensed veterinarian works through a general, fungal and ear examination, and if something turns up that needs testing, our in-house laboratory is on site rather than a courier run away — so a kitten with a skin patch or a grumbling ear gets an answer the same visit.

Kittens and adults
When the course starts, and when the booster is due
A kitten's protection is built over a short series of visits, not one appointment — which is why a kitten who has had "her shot" is often not covered yet. Adults keep it topped up once a year.
How many doses she still needs, and how far apart, depends on the age she started and what she has already had, so the vet sets the dates in the room and writes them on the card.

Call first
When to call us instead of booking the vaccination
Vaccinating a cat who is already unwell is a bad idea, and a reaction to a previous vaccine changes what we do next. Any of these means ring us first.
- Sneezing, runny eyes or a blocked nose — that is cat flu, and it gets treated before it gets boosted
- She has not eaten today, or she is hiding somewhere she normally does not
- Vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours
- Facial swelling, hives or laboured breathing after any previous vaccine
- A bite, scratch or abscess from a cat whose history you do not know
- A new rescue living with your other cats before anyone has examined her

Two things. Her cover against the core viruses fades, so she is exposed at exactly the moments she is most likely to meet them — boarding, grooming, a new cat in the house.
